Join the business delegation to Uruguay and meet dairy producers, 6-10 November 2023

The delegation programme offers a unique opportunity for companies along the dairy value chain to tap into the vast business possibilities of the Uruguayan market – a first-of-its-kind business delegation to Uruguay.

The Danish Agriculture & Food Council (DAFC) and The Trade Council in São Paulo invite your company to join a physical business delegation focused on the Uruguayan dairy industry – targeting solution providers at both the primary production level and processing level. You can expect to meet leading local dairy producers through a 5-day programme in Uruguay 6-10 November 2023. The Trade Council in Denmark is supporting the event financially.

WHO SHOULD JOIN?
This business delegation puts spotlight on the dairy production value-chain and the Uruguayan market-leading companies within sustainable dairy production along the value chain. Participation is relevant for Danish companies operating within one of the following areas: equipment and machines for primary production, stable ventilation, breeding, feed stuff production, food processing technology for dairies, solutions related to biosecurity, cooling/cold chain, storage, quality control, ingredients, advisory services, etc.

Focus will be put on sustainable products, solutions and technologies to increase efficiency and automation and to reduce resource/input consumption. Automation and simplification of the dairy process, as well as upcycling of waste products and side-streams at dairies, would also be of interest. Likewise, solutions to increase animal welfare, food safety and animal health will also attract demand.

Participation will allow you to explore the possibilities on a new market to Danish companies with vast growth opportunities.

WHY JOIN?
Uruguay uses 5% of its territory to produce milk in order to feed more than 20 million people annually, equivalent to 6 times its own population. The agricultural sector has the highest income of exports per hectare. Uruguay is also the 7th largest exporting country in the world, having 70% of the industrialised milk dedicated to export. There is a strong integration between various sector organisations which has fostered associative/cooperative work and this strength has been a fundamental pillar to promote the dynamism of the sector. The farm establishments deliver quality milk to the industry/dairies and receive technical assistance and financing. This link is the historical basis of the associative/cooperative dairy production in Uruguay.

The annual consumption of milk in Uruguay is 230 litres of milk per capita, more than double the average world consumption. Fresh, pasteurised milk reaches the consumer free of growth hormones and antibiotics.  Uruguay produces annually 2.200 million litres, of which 90% of the milk production is processed by its own industry. Continuous improvement of processes with increasing technology incorporation is a demand from the market and a place where Danish companies can contribute greatly. Uruguay producers are constantly looking at improving quality standards to attend the most demanding export markets. The country exports to a total of 60 markets where the largest customers in recent years have been Algeria (27%) and Brazil (26%).

Uruguay has 3.300 dairy farmers who send 73% of the milk to the industry, while 27% is used to produce artisan cheese on the establishment/farm. The milk sector in Uruguay employs 20.000 people, and farms are often owned and operated by families (the so called “tambos”). Cattle is fed on open air grazing, based on internationally recognised genetics with 100% of the cattle as registered animals. The average tambos have 150 milking cows and 250 hectares that produce on average 18 litres of milk per day.

Participants are expected to be meet with major industry players, probably companies such as CONAPROLE and Establecimiento Agroindustrial Talar.
