The Danish Agriculture and Food Council, in cooperation with the Danish Embassy in Bangkok, is now offering a tailor-made business delegation visit to Thailand for Danish suppliers to the highly advanced food processing industry in Thailand – building on the successful business matchmaking visit in September 2023.
Why Thailand
- Thailand has the second largest GDP in ASEAN with a dynamic, expanding consumer market supported by a fast-growing middle class. Urbanisation has increased from 45% in 2012 to 52% in 2023
- Thailand is called “the kitchen of the world” with its abundant natural resources, highly skilled workforce, and strength in research. Thailand is one of the largest net food exporting countries, ranked 12th in the world and the second in Asia in 2023
- Thailand targets to become ASEAN's processed food hub by 2027
- With a population of 70 million people, Thailand’s food retail sales reached $5,1 billion in 2022 and projected to grow with 3% annually. This combined with increase of disposable income increases the demand for processed foods
- Thailand exported $26,5 billion in processed food products in 2023 and imported worth $8,2 billion. The total 2023 exports of agricultural and related products reached $48,9 billion
- Thailand recorded more than 28 million arrivals of international tourists in 2023, generating $61 billion in revenue
The Food Processing Sector
- Hosting more than 9,000 food processing companies in Thailand, the country is the main producer and exporter for several processed foods including canned tuna, frozen seafood, shrimp, and chicken
- Processed food exports contribute about 52% of total food exports and account for nearly 15% of Thai manufacturing output
- Thailand produced over 2.8 million tons of chicken and over 280,000 tons of shrimp in 2023, placing the country in the top five globally as both a chicken and shrimp exporter. Approximately 70% of poultry production is locally consumed
- The country is a top-ten global producer of some important agricultural products including rice, cassava, sugarcane, palm oil, coconut and pineapple. By prioritizing R&D, the country is becoming an important production hub for advanced food ingredients from cassava starch such as artificial sweeteners, e.g. maltitol, crystalline, sorbitol, and high-quality monosodium glutamate (MSG). Many leading global food manufacturers process their food ingredient products in Thailand.
- Thailand is also a prime production base for ready meals. In 2023 sales of ready meals in Thailand reached $755 million and with export sales reaching almost the same. An area with very high growth rates of more than 10% annually for the past 5 years.
- The need for sustainable and environmental-friendly packaging is in very high demand.
- Thailand imported agriculture related products, mainly for further processing, for $22,49 billion.
Strong government support
- Food Innopolis was established at Thailand Science Park in 2016. Totalling 124,000 square meters, it is a fully equipped facility offering both wet and dry laboratories and an array of available resources. This is meant to be breeding ground for new innovations.
- The Thai Board of Investment is giving tax breaks and other incentives to modernize the industry even further, meaning that large corporations are more likely to invest in foreign technology otherwise out of budget.
