Business delegation to Mexico

Meetings with the pig sector of Jalisco

The Danish Agriculture & Food Council (DAFC), Danish Industry (DI) and the Danish Embassy in Mexico are inviting companies to join a delegation visit to the State of Jalisco, Mexico with the aim of matching Danish brands with the largest Mexican companies within the pig sector. The delegation will take place 30 September - 2 October 2025.

The objective of the delegation is to match Danish companies delivering new solutions, know-how, and technology to the different parts of the pig sector in the State of Jalisco, Mexico, whether engaged in primary production, abattoirs, processing, storage, logistics or other parts of the value chain.

The Mexican industry is increasingly consolidating, and the larger producers are vertically integrated from artificial insemination to distribution and even retailing. This indicates increasingly professionalized partners looking for state-of-the-art solutions. Denmark’s reputable brand, known for quality and efficiency, aligns well with Mexico’s trends favouring organic, healthy, and gourmet products – a promising fit for Danish companies.

What are the market potentials?

The Mexican pig industry accounts for 1.4% of global production, which places Mexico among the top ten major pork producers worldwide. In 2024, national production reached 1.8 million tonnes, reflecting a higher demand both for domestic and foreign markets.

Pig meat is a key export for Mexico, valued at $276 M USD in 2024. Japan is the main destination market, representing approximately 70% of Mexico’s pork exports, followed significantly by the United States and South Korea.

Current trends suggest an increased demand for Mexican added-value pig meat. In 2024, Mexico was the sixth major pork consumer in the world. Thanks to its versatility and affordability, pork keeps a privileged place within Mexico’s culinary tradition. This brings unique opportunities and challenges for Mexican pig producers to strive in such a dynamic and growing market. In a complex global context, meeting higher quality standards while ensuring competitiveness remain a priority for the pig industry. Implementing innovative technologies and embedding sustainable solutions across the value chain will be key drivers for a more resilient and competitive Mexican pig industry.

Why the stat of Jalisco?

With more than 400,000 tonnes, the State of Jalisco ranks first out of the seven Mexican states and 80% of national pig meat production is concentrated here. As the largest producing state, Jalisco plays a leading role in Mexico’s efforts to develop a more competitive and sustainable pig industry. Reaching higher levels of sustainable productivity and efficiency has become a priority for the whole sector, which demands for increased technification and innovative solutions across the entire pig value chain. Some of the priority areas for Jalisco are:

  • Biosecurity and sanitary control
  • Farm management
  • Environmental technologies and circular economy

Thanks to a globally respected pig production, Denmark is well-positioned to contribute to these objectives and bring significant value to Mexico’s pig sector, both primary production and slaughtering/processing as well as side-streams. With best-in-class solutions remarkably founded on quality and collaboration, the Danish supply chain can seize strategic market opportunities in Mexico by bringing in green solutions and technologies with a high degree of specialisation.

This delegation programme offers the possibility to meet with a selected group of pig producers covering different parts of the pig meat value chain – including primary production, slaughter and processing. These are members of the Jalisco Pig Producers Union (URPJ), whose production range between 3,500 and 8,000 sows. Some of the targeted producers are:

  • Posta El Cuatro
  • LA UNIÓN TEPATITLAN
  • PRODUCTORA DE HUEVO GIGANTES
  • Grupo Avícola Quiñones
  • Agropecuaria la Gaby
  • Agropecuaria El Gran Chaparral
  • Gm Farms

Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) between Denmark and Mexico

The business delegation will run in parallel with an SSC Mission to Jalisco with participation from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) and SEGES. This mission is part of the ongoing government-to-government cooperation between Mexico and Denmark focused on increasing Animal Health and Food Safety. This mission in particular will target traceability of live animals with inspiration from the Danish Central Husbandry Registry (CHR) as an important tool to ensure and tighten biosecurity and monitor and improve animal health. The idea of planning the SSC mission to Jalisco at the same time as the business delegation is to underline the commitment of Denmark-as-a-whole towards increased productivity, sustainability and improved livelihoods within the Mexican pig sector.
