Programme (tentative)
Dairy farming in England – a description
- Potential and Access to South West and North West of England
The South West is England’s largest and most rural region, stretching from Cornwall in the West to Gloucestershire in the North and Wiltshire in the East. Total farmed area covers 1,720 000 hectares and 39% of the dairy herd is located here.
Equally the North West is the second largest dairy region housing 26% of England’s dairy herd. Total farmed area is 893.000 hectares and is located primarily in Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.
The two regions are the most important areas for dairy production with a high concentration of the industry leading farmers, consultancies and dealerships present.
In England there’s a stern focus on delivering on sustainability right from the farmers to the processors to the retailers. For Arla farmer owners it is interesting to invest in technologies that can support their commitments in the Arla FarmAhead programme. Equally other major dairies have initiated programmes that promote the adoption of greener technologies on farm often in cooperation with major retailers as Tescos.
Farming profitability and productivity and animal welfare are another major topic for English dairy farmers. Climate change contribute to more unstable weather conditions with heat stress being an increasing problem alongside challenges to feed production. The concentration of dairy production in the West and arable production in the East of England poses a separate problem, as there’s a surplus of slurry in the East.
Proven Danish solutions that can contribute to improvements to one or some of these challenges will be interesting for English Dairy Farmers.
Average milk yield per cow is 8.278 litres per cow per year – but this covers quite some variation with the best English farmers being on par with Danish dairy producers.
This provides an excellent opportunity for Danish companies to present solutions within dairy technology, manure handling, cooling technologies, feeding technologies, automation and green energy.
Through the Embassy’s cooperation with the National Farmers Union, leading dairies and local consultancies, we have access to leading farms and can facilitate meetings and seminars with the most interested farmers.
Meet the players
The programme combines two seminars, networking opportunities with key participants and field visits to some of England’s most leading dairy farms and equipment dealerships in the country’s leading centres of milk production.
Participants will meet directly with the Chair of Dairy Board South and visit farms that showcase modern herd management and strong environmental ambition.
Through the Embassy’s cooperation with the National Farmers Union, Arla UK and local agricultural partners, the visit ensures direct access to the sector’s key decision-makers, combining knowledge exchange, professional networking and practical insight into England’s most important dairy regions.
